This is an example of Joe Frank turning a show back in upon itself. His hourlong description of his “failure” to produce a show becomes the show itself. “Failure” in the Joe Frank universe is a relative term. Who, after all is a success? What does it mean to be a success? When you consider yourself to be a success, is that the moment when your complacency belies your ability to be a success? Joe Frank defies you to turn the station and listen to other programming. He actually suggests it as part of the show. By revealing more and more of his own anxieties he’s suggesting its OK to admit that we all have shortcomings. I don’t want to give away too much, but he has an encounter with the road crew at a location shot for the television show Simon & Simon and mentions Magnum P.I. Classic episode referencing some classic 80s cheese. Love it.
