This is my absolute favorite episode!
Whether it was his goal or not (and strongly suspect is wasn’t), this episode really drove home for me that magical thinking can be a barrier to happiness.
From Joe’s missed chance at a final visit with his uncle, to Debi’s confusion and cognitive dissonance over “manifesting” a young man with her father’s name, and her cat catching and killing a “magical creature”. Even the talk of Olympic athletes deference to god made me consider this.
Joe also goes into some details of his early life, and clearly life changing first encounter with cancer.
This, more than any other episode, I feel is a key to understanding all the other episodes. Or perhaps a gateway episode?
This might be my desert island Joe Frank episode.
